Quarr Abbey

Puckpool

At Puckpool, a small settlement on the outskirts of Ryde, there is a local legend that the infamous Puck teased a certain Father Martin of St. Helen’s (a village on the eastern side of the Isle of Wight). Puck pretended to be a girl crying in distress and tricked Father Martin into a marsh.

Quarr Abbey

The ‘Feast of Fools’ used to take place at Quarr Abbey (pictured above) on New Years Day, whereby under the authority of the ‘Abbot of Misrule’ the resident monks would dress as women and behave in a rather ungodly manner - such as eating puddings from the alter, singing rude songs, and set fire to shoes as a form of incense!
